My name is Bruce Hartley and over the summer I was shocked to be diagnosed with ALS. I was having slurred speech and weakness in my left hand and mentioned to my primary care doctor. He immediately sent me to a neurologist who diagnosed me. This was a shock to myself, my husband and family. I got a second opinion, and the doctor verified my worst nightmare. Sadly, there is no cure for this terminal disease. My doctors have said I have five to ten years to live. Telling our family was very difficult, and it was hard to tell my dept head, colleagues, and students at my university. They have all been so supportive! Since the summer, I have continued to work at my university this Fall 2022, but I have decided I will teach in the Spring 2023. I will teach one online class in the summer before going on FMLA in the Fall 2023. We are selling our home in Claremore, OK and will move back to Southwest MO in May 2023 to be close to our family as my ALS progresses. ALS is an ugly disease I've learned that it comes with many medical bills, medical equipment, and travel expenses. My husband is trying to help me stay positive, but we have our good and bad days of tears. It is not easy to stay positive when you know you have a terminal disease, but I am certainly trying my best. I will use any money donated to help with medical expenses and some bucket list traveling. My hashtag for social media is #alsthriver. You will have the option of picking up in Springfield at our print shop, having the Hartley family pickup or pay a flat shipping fee ($5.00) to have it shipped directly to you. If you select pickup I will contact you to see if you want to pickup or having someone else pickup for you.
